A Christian Science Reading Room is open to the public and provides a quiet environment set apart exclusively for the study of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Through this study you can learn how to pray and to heal as Christ Jesus (and the prophets and apostles) did. For every human problem, whether related to health, employment, relationships, etc., there is a spiritual law which, when understood and applied, can heal it.
Reading Room librarians can answer questions, guide you to helpful periodicals and reference materials, and can show you how to read the Weekly Bible Lessons.
Open MONDAY - FRIDAY 8 AM to 6 PM
What is it for?
A Christian Science Reading Room is a sanctuary where you can study and refresh yourself spiritually, through prayer deeply rooted in the revelations of truth found in the Holy Bible and in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These two books are the only “preachers” in a Christian Science church.
Literature from The Christian Science Publishing Society (including The Christian Science Monitor), as well as being available for reading on the premises, is also available for purchase.
Who provides it?
This Reading Room, located at 22 East 44th Street is provided and maintained by Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, NYC, a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts. This is a church, in the words of its Founder, “designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”
